Welcome to Veja Mate, your gateway to one of the most ambitious offshore wind projects in the German North Sea.
The ProjectWelcome to Veja Mate, your gateway to one of the most ambitious offshore wind projects in the German North Sea. This site is designed for anyone interested in the future of renewable energy—whether you are an engineer, a policy maker, a student, or simply a curious citizen. Here you will find detailed information about the project's design, technology, installation progress, and the people behind the turbines. We invite you to explore the sections below to understand how Veja Mate is turning strong sea winds into clean electricity for hundreds of thousands of homes.
Harnessing North Sea Winds
Veja Mate is an offshore wind farm with a total capacity of 402 megawatts, located approximately 95 kilometers northwest of Borkum island in the German Exclusive Economic Zone. This area is known for its strong and steady winds, making it an ideal location for generating renewable energy. The project comprises 67 Siemens SWT-6.0-154 turbines, each with a capacity of 6 megawatts and a rotor diameter of 154 meters. Together, these turbines are expected to produce enough electricity to power 400,000 German homes every year, contributing significantly to the country's transition away from fossil fuels.
Offshore wind is a cornerstone of Germany's Energiewende, and Veja Mate is a prime example of how large-scale renewable projects can be deployed in challenging marine environments. By placing turbines far from shore, the project benefits from higher and more consistent wind speeds, which translates into greater energy yield and a more reliable power supply.

The Project: From Planning to Power
The journey of Veja Mate from concept to reality is a story of meticulous planning and engineering excellence. In our Project section, you can learn about the site selection, environmental assessments, and the regulatory framework that governs offshore wind in Germany. We also detail the grid connection process, including the recent milestone where TenneT connected the wind farm to the BorWin2 converter platform, ensuring that the electricity generated can be transmitted to the mainland grid.
Construction began with groundwork launched in early 2016, and since then, the project has progressed through foundation installation, turbine erection, and commissioning. Each phase has involved specialized vessels, skilled crews, and careful coordination to minimize environmental impact and ensure safety.
Turbines and Technology
At the heart of Veja Mate are the Siemens SWT-6.0-154 turbines, which represent some of the most advanced offshore wind technology available. Each turbine has a rated capacity of 6 megawatts and a rotor diameter of 154 meters—about half the height of the Eiffel Tower. The blades are designed to capture maximum energy from the wind while withstanding the harsh marine conditions, including salt spray, high waves, and strong gusts.

In our Turbines section, we explore the engineering behind these machines, from the aerodynamic blade design to the sophisticated control systems that optimize performance. We also discuss the maintenance strategies that will keep the turbines running efficiently for their 25-year design life.
Installation: Building at Sea
Installing 67 massive turbines in the open sea is a logistical challenge of the highest order. Our Installation section takes you behind the scenes of this remarkable feat. You will learn about the specialized jack-up vessels that position themselves on the seabed, the monopile foundations driven deep into the seafloor, and the precise lifting operations that place each turbine on its foundation.
We also cover the cable laying and connection work that links the turbines to each other and to the offshore substation. The entire installation process is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of collaboration across multiple companies and disciplines.
